What are the Emmys?
An Emmy Award, or simply Emmy, is an American award that recognizes excellence in the television industry, and corresponds to the Oscar (for film), the Tony Award (for theatre), and the Grammy Award (for music).

Why is it called an Emmy?
A television engineer named Louis McManus designed the statuette, using his wife as a model. The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS) says that the statuette represents the arts (a winged woman) and the sciences (an atom). The first Emmys were given out in 1949. It was named after a camera tube used in early television, known to those in the industry as Immy; the academy began referring to it as the Emmy because the more feminine name suited the statuette. There is much more history to this little gem if you are interested!

Who will be hosting?
“Stephen is the ultimate master of ceremonies with award-winning creative talents, and as we’ve seen the past few months, he has a fearless passion for live television. We look forward to honoring television’s best while entertaining audiences with the creative energy and sharp comedy of Stephen Colbert,” said Jack Sussman.
“This will be the largest audience to witness an Emmys, period,” said Stephen Colbert. “Both in person and around the globe.”
